VARIETY (Maximum proper) 2)
← Back
The variety of a system as "determined by the product of the degrees of freedom of each of its subsystems" (F. HEYLIGHEN, pers. comm.).
HEYLIGHEN comments: "In general it seems sufficient to remove certain (inadequate) constraints in order to increase the variability of the system. However it is clear that variety cannot be increased indefinitely in this way… If we want to increase (it) beyond this limit we will have to increase the number of subsystems, in accordance with TURCHIN's proposed mechanism (of meta-control emergence or building" (Ibid).
