The fivefold symmetry appears in the forms of numerous natural systems, as well as in the clusters created by diffusion limited aggregation (DLA), which, quoting I. STEWART: "… is baffling because the rules for forming the clusters do not involve any obvious fivefold symmetry" (1992,p.14).
Fivefold symmetry is also subjacent in the FIBONACCI series and the golden proportion to which its ratio tends. It seems thus an intrinsic natural property somehow mirrored by abstract number theory.
