Stabilization as described by ASHBY can be maintained only inasmuch as the perturbing stimulus does not lead to a giant fluctuation leading it far away from thermodynamic equilibrium, and the possible crossing of an instability threshold, leading to a bifurcation.
When the system is thus transformed, it may however reach a new level of stability.
Bifurcation points delimit in this way the stages of the system's evolution or history.
