SELF-REPLICATING LOOP 3)5)
← Back
An algorithm that allows an automaton to produce copies of itself
Until now, such devices are merely computing models
M. SIPPER and J.A. REGGIA write: "Although various teams have created cellular automata in electronic hardware, such systems are probably too wasteful for practical applications: automata were never really intended to be implemented directly. Their purpose is to illuminate underlying principles of replication and, by doing so, inspire more concrete efforts"(p. 35, 1991)
The authors do comment about the possible creation of physical replicating machines and the disquieting question marks about their eventual relations with humanity (p. 35)
