The set-point or standard to which a regulator compares the observed values.
By comparing the obsrved values with the standard, the regulator produces an error's measure that is used to define a correction to be imposed by the effector.
In accordance with a memory (i.e. Register) of previous states, several reference values may be inscribed within the system.
