The International Encyclopedia of Systems and Cybernetics was first edited and published by the system scientist Charles François in 1997. The online version that is provided here was based on the 2nd edition in 2004. It was uploaded and gifted to the center by ASC president Michael Lissack in 2019; the BCSSS purchased the rights for the re-publication of this volume in 200?. In 2018, the original editor expressed his wish to pass on the stewardship over the maintenance and further development of the encyclopedia to the Bertalanffy Center. In the future, the BCSSS seeks to further develop the encyclopedia by open collaboration within the systems sciences. Until the center has found and been able to implement an adequate technical solution for this, the static website is made accessible for the benefit of public scholarship and education.

PRIORITIES in systemic terms 1)4)

In systemic terms, the most important priorities are the global and the long term ones. This unfortunately is quite contradictory to the generally short term vision and interests of individuals and communities, who consciously or not, are frequently disposed to sacrifice median or long term futures for quick benefits. G. HARDIN described a typical aspect of violation of global priorities in his "Tragedy of Commons"… Without much real echo.

UNEP recommands to give highest priority to "urgent requirements to prevent further irreversible damage to living resources, e.g. extinction of species, loss of life support systems, etc…" (UNESCO-UNEP, p.22).

The re-orientation of global priorities is a matter of re-education, mainly at deciders levels, a very tall order indeed. It is to be feared that priorities will be modified only after the occurrence of considerable disasters, which would be nature's feedback to human abuse.
