About

The International Encyclopedia of Systems and Cybernetics was first edited and published by the system scientist Charles François in 1997. The online version that is provided here was based on the 2nd edition in 2004. It was uploaded and gifted to the center by ASC president Michael Lissack in 2019; the BCSSS purchased the rights for the re-publication of this volume in 200?. In 2018, the original editor expressed his wish to pass on the stewardship over the maintenance and further development of the encyclopedia to the Bertalanffy Center. In the future, the BCSSS seeks to further develop the encyclopedia by open collaboration within the systems sciences. Until the center has found and been able to implement an adequate technical solution for this, the static website is made accessible for the benefit of public scholarship and education.

POSITIONAL VALUE 1)2)

The value of an element in a system as related to its place in a global structure.

Back to 1941, A. ANGYAL stated that: "The members of a system… do not become constituents of the system by means of their immanent qualities, but by means of their distribution or arrangement within the system. The object does not participate in the system by an inherent quality, but by its positional value in the system" (1969, p.20).

While fundamental, this concept should also be put into perspective: To become a part of a certain system, any element must be endowed with some intrinsic characteristics that makes it compatible with the system. It is the case for example for the immune compatibility of a cell, or the professional, linguistic or cultural compatibility of an individual in an organization.

Moreover, the element, whatever its position, must be activated through a morphogenetic and autopoietic differentiation process, triggered by some few original elements.
