PHENOTYPE 1)
← Back
The set of the observable characteristics of an organism as it results from the influence of the environment upon its genetic make-up (genotype).
The phenotype reflects the adaptive leeway of the organism in relation to the environment, but within the limits of the constraints imposed by the inherited genotype. The phenotypic adaptation may be due for instance to ecological factors (drought, strong winds, intense cold, high altitutde), or ethological ones (invention of a new behavior)
