"An oscillator that has a standard wave-form and amplitude to which it returns after small perturbations" (S. STROGATZ and I. STEWART, 1993, p.68).
The authors explain how such oscillators work: "They incorporate a dissipative mechanism to damp oscillations that grow too large and a source of energy to pump up those that become too small" (Ibid).
In the case of living systems, the result is homeostasis, acquired through suitable regulations and the use of stored resources. P. VENDRYES' counter-aleatory reserves concept is closely related.
