NOOSPHERE 1)4)
← Back
"The sphere of interrelations between society and nature within the limits of which the wise human activities become the main factor of development" (UNE.1, p.19).
The definition from the "Glossary of environmental education terms" of UNESCO – UNEP seems optimistic.
While the existence of the noosphere is evermore evident and human intervention upon nature evermore intense, it is far from evident that it is always "wise" and that it leads finally to a development which is supposed to be sustainable.
A harmonious noosphere would need quite a better understanding by man of the effects of his interferences with natural processes now and in the future (specially at long term).
The word and concept was introduced by the well-known French Jesuit and paleontologist P. THEILARD de CHARDIN around 1950.
