NICHE (Empty) 2)
← Back
A potentially useful, but unoccupied part in an environment.
In an ecological environment, such empty niches may appear after important perturbations, as for example a cyclone, a bush or forest fire, or on new alluvial islands in a delta.
In human activities many unoccupied or underoccupied parts of all continents were once empty niches, apt for colonization.
Technical innovations are also frequently creating new empty niches in economic activities. The whole sector of electronics and computation is an impressive example.
