A "synthetic system which can generate and propagate an action potential, and hence exhibit excitability" (R. ROSEN, 1979, p.181).
ROSEN comments: "… the relation between such model systems and their biological prototypes cannot reside in any identity at the particulate level, but must reside in common functional or relational properties which are preserved invariant when we replace the prototype by the model. Thus the wide employment of model systems already reveals the tacit recognition of analytic alternatives to reductionism" (Ibid).
