HETEROSIS 1)4)
← Back
Superior qualities produced by the cross-breeding of different genetic lines in plants or animals.
R.L. MEIER tried to extend the concept to social sciences and in this case defined heterosis as "Hybrid vigor as a consequence of acculturative processes" (1961, p.110).
Such processes consist of "Selective combination of elements from both the cultures so that a distinct hybrid is formed, the most prominent example being that of England after the Norman invasion" (p.111).
The numerous challenges produced in individuals by a different worldview and the need to find adequate adaptive responses may be considered as the means for heterosis in clashing cultures.
The subject, unfortunately has not been much researched.
