This concept seems to be specifically useful for populations. HEYLIGHEN gives as an example the process of crystallization, where the concept of template applies easily.
In the case of living systems the concept of basic type or archetype corresponds to the one of template: the number of members of a species increases, but they remain true to type, i.e. no new species does appear.
