A singularity in a 3-dimensional space that may generate a discontinuity in a process' behavior.
The fold-catastrophe is the simplest of the seven elemental catastrophes in R. THOM's theory. It has been used in numerous disciplines to modelize sudden shifts between two quite different types of behavior.
