"The subsystem which alters the code of information input to it from other information processing subsystems, from a "private" code used internally by the system into a "public" code which can be interpreted by other systems in its environment" (J.G. MILLER, 1978, p.3).
The encoder is one of the 20 critical subsystems in MILLER's taxonomy of living systems.
