In any socialized group, the subdivision into distinct subgroups for the carrying out of some specialized tasks.
The original idea was developed by Adam SMITH in his "Wealth of Nations" in relation to Economics (1776).
However it is now clear that division of labor is a very general societal property. It can be found in insects societies and even in slime molds (Dictyostelium discoideum) and in some bacterial colonies (Anabaena) (J. SHAPIRO, 1988)
