A departure from the normal state in a homeostatic system.
The amplitude of a deviation can be a good indicator of the stability of a system. For practical purposes, it should be closely monitored. I. PRIGOGINE and P.M. ALLEN write: "If it decreases in time, then the solution is stable; but if it grows in time, then the state is unstable because the least little fluctuation will be amplified in the system and drive it away from the stationary state" (1982, p.9).
