CORRESPONDENCE PRINCIPLE 3)
← Back
"Any new theory should reduce to the old theory for those cases in which the old theory is known to hold" (St. UMPLEBY, 1979, p.11).
UMPLEBY attributes the principle to H.von FOERSTER. He however adds: "This principle assumes that science grows somewhat like concentric circles" (Ibid).
This phenomenon is a quite general feature of science evolution during the 20th Century and finds its most general explanation in GÖDEL's theorem.
